Teaching public speaking, persuasion, presentation skills and confidence through the art of debate
Marymount University is a beautiful campus nestled right outside of our nation's capitol. The campus was located on the former estate of Admiral Presley Marion Rixey, Naval Surgeon General and personal physician to Presidents Theodore Roosevelt and William McKinley. In October 2010, Marymount celebrated its 60th anniversary with the grand opening and ribbon cutting ceremony for Caruthers Hall, an academic facility focused on the sciences and health sciences, and Rose Bente Lee Ostapenko Hall, a residence hall providing apartment-style housing for 239 students.
At our Public Speaking and Debate Camp level, middle school and high school students will learn the fundamentals of public speaking and argumentation, enabling them to develop core presentation and debating skills that boost confidence and self-esteem. Students at the Public Speaking and Debate Camp level will work on effective public speaking and argumentation, allowing them to further advance their presentation and debate skills to prepare them for the real world. Capitol Debate has helped me to succeed in public speaking and debate skills in general. I have become more comfortable in front of a crowd
Capitol Debate was only the second time I had ever been away from home and I was very apprehensive at first. However I immediately felt at home as soon as I stepped through my dorm room and that feeling continued throughout my entire two week stay. From four square to water parks I had so much fun and I made many great friends. I learned so much and not only did I improve as a student and debater, I became a better person. Capitol Debate has really worked hard to provide a great experience to campers and it reflected in everything we did. I am so glad I attended this camp and I am looking forward to many more times!!
I had a great time at Capitol debate! At first I was hesitant to go because I thought it would be all debate. However, even though there were hard times, at the end I found myself quietly crying because I had to leave.
As a future educator in debate, Capitol Debate gave me an amazing opportunity to both learn about teaching from other staff members while also learning incredible lessons from the students themselves!
I came back to this camp again and this time it was just as good or better than last year. Also, my lab leader was extremely inspirational and made learning fun and enjoyable. I'll be walking away with lots of information and inside jokes. CRUSH THEIR DREAMS!!!
I don't do very well away from home. I was very skeptical about coming to camp, yet I am a returning camper. This camp is just amazing. I learned so so much. My instructor this year, Doug Miller, was so amazing. I have been debating for three years, yet I learned new things that I had never even heard of. I can tell you that I improved by a lot at the end of this camp experience and what I learned will definitely stick with me forever. All my worries about debating in a high school debate league have definitely been reduced. But it wasn't only class that changed me. This camp is just filled with such amazing people that you can go to at any time. The instructors also teach us so much. Finally, Victor is just amazing. He cares about all of his staff and students and wants the best for us. He basically never sleeps to answer calls from parents and help students. He loves his job and it is definitely reflected in the way that he will stay up all night if you need help and if you are having a problem, he actually acts on it and fixes it. This camp was amazing and I definitely recommend it.
Capitol debate let me develop my skills in not only the debate we were working with, but hollistically and to the point where I flourished in all sorts of events!
It is a big investment, but with sure return. Because our son thrives on learning, and this camp gives him that. It is a great program - your kids get to learn the gist of debate and how to approach it. Expressing your opinion is one of the most important skills to survive this society, and this program gives the opportunity to hone the skill.
Before Capitol Debate I didn't have many chances for public speaking, but during it, I was able to work on the flaws I had, like swaying and hand gestures, and improved a lot on my speaking. I now feel much better at talking in front of others confidently and am excited to participate in many activities in high school that require it!
Capitol Debate was my first debate experience and I think it provided a great gateway to my future debate career. The activities were great, the community was great, the material was great, the residential provisions were great, everything was solid in general. 10/10 would go again.
