Teaching public speaking, persuasion, presentation skills and confidence
Loyola University's Columbia Graduate Center hosts our longest-running day camp program. The campus is the location for many of the University's graduate programs, including its Masters of Business Administration. It is situated in an industrial park, close to a local church, numerous restaurants, financial institutions, and technology companies. The Columbia Graduate Center sits directly beside a beautiful pond, which is visible from many of the classrooms and conference rooms. In 1949, Loyola grew beyond undergraduate studies and formed a graduate division. The graduate school now includes programs in arts & sciences, education, and business. It has grown to over 2500 post-graduate students, split between the Timonium Campus and the Columbia Campus.
The goal of our day camps is to teach debate students the basics of argument and develop communication skills, problem-solving abilities, critical thinking, and increased self-esteem. They are not as rigorous as our corresponding overnight academic camps, so they are the perfect opening for new debaters. Complete description »

data from 2017 parent survey
Not only will Capitol Debate students learn new skills through our programs; they will feel an increase in self-worth, learn critical thinking skills and improve public speaking and communication skills with their peers. Two weeks at camp will result in lifelong friendships and memories that will resonate with our students throughout their academic, personal and professional careers. Campers return to our program year after year because of how life-changing our Summer Debate Camps prove to be. Our parents will tell you themselves that they proudly stand by their investment in Capitol Debate because of the impact it has had on their families.
My son absolutely loved the camp even though the work was rigorous and the hours long. He came away loving debate and wanting to excel in debate. Each day my son was excited to be at debate camp. The program is well organized, engaging, fun while at the same time the students are receiving a rigorous crash course in debate. He definitely will attend next summer.
Communication skills are the most important skill necessary for success. Capitol Debate curriculum is focused on the whole student speaker and not JUST competitive debate It is a very good mix of public speaking and debating.
My son enjoyed both the academic challenge and the social activities. While preparing for his final debates, he was supported by an excellent, knowledgeable staff and a community of other campers who had similar goals and interests. The camp staff pays close attention to the campers' needs. They organize the campers' days carefully to encourage both academic learning and fun, social interaction. This high degree of organization and the staff's compassionate attention was key to making my son's camp experience a success.
We would say that the camp combines learning, working on speaking skills, camaraderie and fun very well. I would say highly organized and impactful two weeks.
I became much more independent and mature in these two weeks than what I normally would have in two months. You have so much fun in the dorms that you don't have time to miss your family. Camp is an awesome and epic experience!!
Capitol Debate offers kids just the right amount of fun and academics at camp! My daughter Natalie Gonzalez, loved everything about the camp.
Capitol Debate has the perfect balance of learning and fun. Debate skills apply to all areas of study. Learning to research a topic, present arguments and speak convincingly are all valuable skills. However, while Capitol Debate emphasizes all of these skills, there are plenty of opportunities to socialize and celebrate. The staff at CD is impressive and invested in each camper's success. Capitol Debate has changed my daughter's life. Her confidence has blossomed. She has a keen awareness of current events and constitutional rights. Additionally, she has new friends throughout the country.
Allowing your child to attend this camp is life changing in a very good way!
The camp was challenging and very beneficial. My daughter not only learned a great deal, but she made treasured friends from around the globe!
This is my third year attending a Capitol Debate summer camp, and yet again, I had an amazing experience. I had a lot of fun and learned a lot!
