John Arnold


Coach of Howard High School Speech & Debate Team, Ellicott City, MD

Currently, John is the head coach of the developing Howard Lions’ Speech & Debate Team. As the head coach of Centennial High’s award-winning debate and speech program, John headed up one of the top debating teams in Maryland. His freshman team ranked in the national top 20 in 2008; his varsity teams advanced to the national championships. John has won many awards as a speech competitor for Calvert Hall College High School. He received his B.A. from the University of Pittsburgh, his M.Ed from Indiana University of Pennsylvania, as well as various other certifications from Juniata and McDaniel Colleges. He served as a Peace Corps Volunteer from 1996-1998 and taught fourth grade prior to his success as a debate coach. He has served as a county level resource teacher in ESOL and is currently proudly helping teenaged immigrants from around the world find their voices in English as an ESOL teacher and co-teacher of English, Social Studies and Science. His daughter, Hope, now debates for Duquesne University, since graduating from Howard and Capitol Debate programs.

John is returning for his 11th year with Capitol Debate.
