Club Debate League

The Capitol Debate Club League provides students the opportunity to debate year round! Find your debate league nearest you.

Capitol Debate is very excited to announce 5 regional debate leagues in the International Club Debate League (ICDL) for the 2017-18 season. We will now be offering regional leagues for students in the following regions of the country:

Our topic for the May Nationals Tournament will be: Resolved: Free speech should not protect hate speech.

Region States Covered Venue for Region
Boston Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Connecticut Natick, MA
Northeast New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania Morristown, NJ
Mid-Atlantic Maryland, Virginia, D.C., Delaware and North Carolina Tyson, VA
Northwest Washington, Oregon and Vancouver Bellevue, WA
West Texas, California, Arizona, Nevada and Utah Carlsbad, CA

Each league will have up to 5 tournaments per year including one in October, December, January, Feb/March and May. May will be our National Championships!

This expansion comes on the heels of a very successful ICDL Nationals where over 100 students from different clubs competed from local leagues all around the country for the title of National Champion.

Both returning and new students should expect an educational and competitive experience in their respective leagues. This is a great way for students to continue enhancing their debate skills after camp is over and a key building block in reaping the full benefits that debate and public speaking training have to offer.

Registration is now open for 2018 dates Winter session.

The league is open to all students, grades 6 – 12 that have completed one of our Summer Debate Camps and/or Online Introduction to Club Debate. If you have never taken one of our programs, your first semester will consist of 10 introductory classes plus one online debate. After taking the introductory club semester, you will be jumping right into league competitions!

We never let you learn without practicing. Each week, students work with leading coaches to review feedback on their cases. The coaches hold strategy sessions. They listen as students redo speeches from the past week, critique the speeches, and give instruction. They lead online practice debates, show students how to evaluate evidence, give speaking drills, and hold Q&A sessions. We provide everything you need to become a debater, with or without a school team.

Learning has changed over the years and we have consistently found that we can better teach students online. Capitol Debate has successfully used live interactive online training for over 5 years now with great success. Our students have not only grown as debaters but have won national championships!

The program is very collaborative. Students can research their cases online, we can have the students share their screens with other students so that we can collaboratively develop our strategies, and we can easily work on the same case at the same time together via Google Documents. The online platform allows Capitol Debate to bring the world’s leading debate experts right to your home no matter where you live!

We Make Learning Easy for All

It is as simple as having a computer or laptop with internet coverage, a webcam, and microphone. You will have a login id to enter into the sessions every week. No worries if you miss class – all classes are taped and stored online! We have tons of resources for your learning in our online training center.

We’ll teach you to be more than an effective debater… we’ll teach you to become a thinker, a speaker, a leader, and a team player. You’ll learn to more effectively analyze problems, research solutions, and communicate your findings clearly, concisely, and convincingly.

Joining a debate team isn’t all about work. You’ll have a lot of fun. Your teammates will become friends. You will travel together, regionally and nationally, you will team up, and you will debate against some of the finest middle school and high school debate teams in the country.

Now is your chance to build connections and skills that will aid you as you advance academically and professionally. Affiliation with a middle school or high school debate team will help you get college scholarships. Schools are looking for the skills we teach. Employers are as well. Now is the time to learn them!

How Do I Get Involved?

Joining is easy. Register online. The cost is $1,000 per semester plus $300 tournament registration fee. This price pays for your training, your materials, and all evidence you’ll need in your debates and your entry fee into 2 tournaments that semester.
